  • Who is involved in direct selling, MLM (Multi-Level Marketing), Network Marketing?
An estimated 15.2 million people are involved in direct selling in the U.S., and more than 59 million worldwide. Most are women, though nearly a third are men or two-person teams such as couples. The vast majority are independent business people - they are micro-entrepreneurs whose purpose is to market the product and/or services of the company they voluntarily choose to represent - not employees of the company. Approximately 90 percent of all direct marketers operate their businesses part-time.

  • Are U.S. direct sales increasing?
Yes. Direct marketing is a rapidly growing industry. U.S. sales totaled $32.18 billion in 2006, up from $26.7 billion just five years earlier, with more than 74 percent of the American public having purchased goods or services through direct selling. Worldwide sales are also strong with more than $109 billion in sales.

  • What products and services are marketed through direct marketing?
Virtually every consumer product or service can be purchased through direct marketing. People who purchase through direct marketing cite product quality, uniqueness and money-back guarantees as the top reasons for shopping through direct selling.

  • What is multilevel marketing?
Multilevel marketing refers more specifically to a type of compensation plan found in direct selling. A direct selling company that offers a multilevel compensation plan pays its representatives/distributors based not only on one's own product sales, but on the product sales of one's "TEAM/downline" (the people a representative/distributor has brought into the business, and, in turn, the people they have brought into the business).

  • What is the difference between single level and multilevel compensation plans?
Single level compensation plan means a representative/distributor is compensated based solely on one's own product sales. In a multilevel compensation plan, representatives/distributors are compensated based not only on one's own product sales, but on the product sales of one's TEAM/downline.

  • How many direct marketing companies are there?
It is impossible to estimate the number of direct marketing companies operating at any given time. This is a result of several factors. First, most states do not require direct marketing companies to register as such. Therefore, no exhaustive list exists. Second, as with any business, many direct marketing companies do not thrive in the direct marketing market and have a relatively short life span. In fact, many companies may even come and go before they could even be "counted."

  • Multilevel Marketing - Legitimate income opportunities
Multilevel marketing is a popular way of retailing in which consumer products are sold, not in stores by sales clerks, but by independent businessmen and women (IBOs), usually in clients' homes. As an IBO you can set your own hours and earn money by marketing consumer products supplied by an established company.

In a multilevel structure you can also build and manage your own salesforce by recruiting, motivating, supplying and training others to market those products. Your compensation then includes a percentage of the sales of your entire sales group as well as earnings on your own sales to retail clients. This opportunity has made multilevel marketing an attractive way of starting a business with comparatively little money.

  • How to tell the difference between a legitimate business and a disguised pyramid scheme?
Pyramid schemes seek to make money from you (and quickly). Multilevel marketing companies seek to make money with you as you build your business (and theirs) marketing consumer products. Before you sign up with a company, investigate carefully. A good way to begin is to ask yourself these three questions:
    • How much are you required to pay to become an IBO? If the startup cost is substantial, be careful! The start-up fee in multilevel companies is generally small (usually for a sales kit sold at or below company cost). These companies want to make it easy and inexpensive for you to start marketing. Pyramid schemes, on the other hand, make nearly all of their profit on signing up new recruits. Therefore, the cost to become a distributor is usually high. CAUTION: PYRAMIDS OFTEN DISGUISE ENTRY FEES AS PART OF THE PRICE CHARGED FOR REQUIRED PURCHASES OF TRAINING, COMPUTER SERVICES, PRODUCT INVENTORY, etc. These purchases may not even be expensive or "required," but there will be considerable pressure to "take full advantage of the opportunity.
    • Will the company buy back unsold inventory? IF YOU COULD BE STUCK WITH UNSOLD INVENTORY, BEWARE! Legitimate companies which require inventory purchases will usually "buy back" unsold products if you decide to quit the business. Some state laws require buy-backs for at least 90% of your original cost.
    • Are the company's products sold to consumers? IF THE ANSWER IS NO (OR NOT MANY), STAY AWAY! This is a key element. Multilevel marketing (like other methods of retailing) depends on selling to consumers and establishing a market. This requires quality products, competitively priced. Pyramid schemes, on the other hand, are not concerned with sales to end users of the product. Profits are made on volume sales to new recruits, who buy the products, not because they are useful or attractively priced, but because they must buy them to participate. Inventory purchases should never be more than you can realistically expect to sell or use yourself.
  • Will you handle my taxes?
You will be responsible for your own taxes. We are not tax experts and suggest you consult with a tax expert if you have any tax related questions. But, you will love the tax advantages of having your own business!
